Juralco Solarzip® Outdoor Blinds – Frequently Asked Questions

March 6, 2026 / project

Solarzip® outdoor blinds are designed to enhance a wide range of residential and commercial spaces by providing effective sun control, weather protection, and year-round usability. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about the Solarzip® system. For project-specific advice, contact one of our nationwide Juralco® awning suppliers.

Where can Solarzip® blinds be used?

Solarzip® blinds are suitable for a wide variety of outdoor environments, including:

  • Residential decks, patios, balconies, and pergolas
  • Outdoor rooms and louvre roof systems
  • Commercial hospitality areas such as cafés, bars, and dining terraces
  • Workspaces requiring shade, wind reduction, or privacy

Fabric options allow you to manage sunlight, reduce glare, provide privacy, and achieve some weather protection, all while maintaining outward visibility.

Why choose an external sunshade?

Solarzip® external blinds help block heat before it reaches your outdoor living area, making them an energy-efficient and effective way to control temperature year-round. They keep spaces cool in summer by blocking heat from the outside, and warmer in colder months by reducing heat loss through the fabric from the inside.

Additional benefits include:

  • Protection of furniture and décor from UV damage
  • Enhanced privacy
  • Reduction of glare for improved comfort
  • Increased usability of outdoor areas throughout the year

How does the Solarzip® side‑fastening system work?

Solarzip® utilises a durable zip-guided tensioning system that is welded directly to the fabric. This system locks the fabric securely into the side channels, offering:

  • Reduced light gaps
  • Minimised fabric movement in light wind
  • A neat, smooth guide when raising or lowering the blind
  • Added stability and protection

This makes Solarzip® a reliable solution for exposed or high-use areas.

What sizes can Solarzip® blinds be made in?

Solarzip® blinds are available in widths from 1000 mm to 4000 mm, and drops from 1000 mm to 3000 mm.
Maximum dimensions may vary depending on:

  • Fabric choice
  • System type
  • Installation requirements

Your installer can confirm the most suitable size for your specific project.

Can Solarzip® blinds be used in high‑wind conditions?

Solarzip® blinds are not engineered to withstand strong or damaging winds. For safety and longevity, blinds should always remain fully retracted during high winds or storms.

For site-specific recommendations, particularly important in exposed locations, consult your local Juralco® Solarzip® supplier.

Are the Solarzip® fabrics waterproof?

Solarzip® fabrics are water‑repellent and breathable, but not fully waterproof.
With regular maintenance, water repellence can be refreshed using Scotchgard™ Repellent Protector to extend fabric performance.

Do Solarzip® blinds provide UV protection?

Yes. Solarzip® fabrics have been tested and proven to block up to 98% of UV radiation when used in shade applications. The Cancer Society of New Zealand recommends shade as a key component of effective sun protection. Additional information is available at www.cancernz.org.nz.

Can Solarzip® blinds be installed in spaces that are not perfectly square?

In most cases, yes. The Solarzip® system includes side adjustments that help installers compensate for minor out-of-square variations in walls, posts, or structures.

A trained installer will assess your space and determine the best installation method.

Will Solarzip® fabrics develop mildew?

Mildew will not grow on the fabric unless contaminants such as food, organic matter, or dirt are present. Keeping the blinds clean is the best defence against mildew.

How do I care for my Solarzip® blinds?

Routine maintenance preserves the performance and appearance of your blinds. We recommend:

General Care

  • Hose down fabric monthly with clean water to prevent dirt buildup
  • Every 2–3 years, perform a more thorough clean depending on your environment

Cleaning Instructions

  • Use lukewarm water and mild detergent on fabric
  • Avoid oil-based sprays, as these can damage certain fabrics and cause grime buildup in the side guides
  • Clean aluminium components with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth
  • Brush gently with a soft brush, especially along the side channels
  • Rinse well and allow to air‑dry naturally
  • Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasive tools, or high-pressure water

Your installer can provide care advice tailored to your selected fabric and installation location.
